Computer Forensic Tool Testing Project

There is a critical need in the law enforcement community to ensure the reliability of computer forensic tools. The Computer Forensic Tool Testing (CFTT) project aims to establish a methodology for testing computer forensic software tools and has used these standards to test many of the computer forensic tools available today. With the help of computer forensics detectives on a regional task force, the FBI St. Louis Division has arrested more than 100 people on child pornography and child sex crimes charges in the last two years, the most of any field office in the nation.

New Trojan Evades Banks’ Anti-Fraud Systems

URLZone, a next-generation Trojan recently discovered pilfering online bank accounts around the world, calculates how much money to steal from a victim's account without raising suspicion. Then it forges the victim's on-screen bank statements so the person and bank don't see the unauthorized transaction.

Suffolk Lands Federal Grant to Expand Efforts against Sex Offenders

The Suffolk, New York, Police Department has been selected as one of 26 law enforcement agencies in 19 states to be awarded funds under the federal Child Sexual Predator Program (CSPP). The $488,601 grant was secured through a nomination by the Eastern District of the U.S. Attorney General's Office.

Police Use Grant for Cell Phone Forensics

Part of a $100,000 federal grant received by the Cranberry, Pennsylvania, police department will be used for equipment allowing the retrieval of data from cellular telephones. This kind of computer forensics work currently is hired out to state police or other investigatory agencies.

DHS to Hire 1,000 Cybersecurity Experts

The Department of Homeland Security will be hiring up to 1,000 cybersecurity experts — analysts, programmers, and systems engineers — in the next three years. The department will use direct hiring authority, bypassing the federal government's time-consuming and onerous hiring process.
