MyKey Technology announced the release of SPUMA, their latest product for computer forensics and E-Discovery.
SPUMA is a specialized adapter that adapts SATA or PATA (IDE) write blocks to work with USB Mass Storage Class devices. This includes Thumb drives, external drives like the Maxtor One-touch and Flash memory readers. Until now, a forensic investigator or E-Discovery technician had to buy a separate USB write block in order to image or preview USB devices. USB blockers are slow, expensive, or both. Leveraging the existing investment in write blocker technology, SPUMA extends the capabilities of field and court tested units to include USB mass storage class devices.
SPUMA is not a write block, it is an adapter. It is designed to be used with existing write blocks. All computer forensics professionals have an old PATA (IDE) write block sitting around gathering dust now that most cases involve SATA. With SPUMA, old write blocks once again can become a productive part of a modern forensics toolkit.
You can even plug a USB to SATA adapter on the SPUMA and use that old write block to image or preview a new SATA drive. Using other off the shelf adapters, a write block with SPUMA can image or preview different types of flash memory, SIM cards, Micro hard drives, and ZIF hard drives. Virtually all USB Mass Storage Class compliant devices will work with SPUMA.
SPUMA has both PATA (IDE) and SATA connections to the write blocker and a USB Hi-Speed host port. Unlike other USB write block solutions, SPUMA is fast. If the system supports it, SPUMA transfers data at speeds up to 35Megabytes per second.
